Today we’re presenting an interview with the lovely Irish designer Maria Lola Roche. Being an artist and designer, her artwork features in the private collection of Ian Curtis, and her designs have awarded her international recognition by Marco Vincenzo [Fendi] and secured her places in awards such as the 2013 DIT Vodafone Awards and the Irish Peroni Awards.

FF: It’d be lovely if you could tell us a little bit about yourself. What has been your educational background thus far? Which things spark your interest the most in your daily life? If you couldn’t have been a fashion designer, what other path would you have taken?

Maria Lola Roche : I was born in Dublin and moved to the country with my family in my teenage years and now I reside in Dublin. I’ve always been drawing, since as early as I can remember, and used to always have a suitcase for my drawings and paintings. I felt so attached to this suitcase and was devastated when I found out in later life, water had got into it and damaged it. In school I loved art, my teacher told me in secondary school, that I was going to one of the greats, and I was shocked by this statement as I had just apologised to her for not being able to listen to her instruction and going of on my own tangent.

I had to focus really hard on my leaving cert subjects, and so my art went on the back burner and my portfolio was never completed in order to enter art college and I found myself in an Accounting and HR degree. I never stopped drawing, it was something that I never thought about I just did-out of necessity. I didn’t understood this urgency for a long time and even hated it for a while, as I felt like if I wanted to stop, I couldn’t and not have this need to draw.

I can’t really remember the beginning of my love for clothes and making them. As a child I remember exchanging my first teddy bear for a doll dress I just had to have and my father was broken hearted when he found out. I desperately tried to get the teddy back with little avail. I began to make dresses when my granny died as I was given her old black singer machine. I enrolled in the Grafton Academy of Fashion Design at night through out my Accounting degree. I got a job as a fashion guru for Hotpress/One Productions, but at the time there was a rule preventing TV magazine shows, so it never got picked up and now these types of shows are on every channel in Ireland. With the BA completed, I found myself applying to do an MA in Advertising, doing art direction. In the interview the lecturer told me I should apply to an art college and urged me not to do this MA, but I didn’t take his advice because at this time I was rejecting my need to create and felt art direction was a happy medium.

Afterwards I felt incomplete, even after getting the highest in my class for my thesis, I felt that it wasn’t enough. At this time I began to paint my first art collection “Reconnection’ and got a job in an art gallery as a curator. I decided to organise an arts festival, bringing 50 artists, musicians, cinematographers, graffiti artists together under one roof. It received widespread media coverage such as The Irish Tribune, Le Cool and The Irish Independent and attracted a crowd of 500. I ended up getting a job in a Contemporary Art Magazine, Circa, but I was overwhelmed by an urge to go back to college and study fashion and left Circa to start the BA in Griffith college.

At this time, I met Hollywood actor Cillain Murphy and gave him one of my paintings for his collection. I was also granted the opportunity to present New Order, the Joy Division ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ award on stage with them. Ian Curtis’s daughter, Natalie Curtis now has a painting of mine in her private collection.

FF: What messages or concepts do you wish to transmit through your collections? / What inspired your latest collection?

Maria Lola Roche : My work is considered Avant Garde and in this collection I explored my fascination with the form that all humans exist in from birth until death – a form that contributes to our identity and embodies the abstract. The visual focus was on certain parts of the body, in particular the ribcage. Exploring the ribcage’s negative and positive space led me to create contemporary bespoke haute couture designs that push the boundaries of fashion, and become pieces of art instead of mere clothes.

FF: Coming from an Irish background, did you feel it was complicated to break into the fashion world?

Maria Lola Roche : Philip Tracy has revolutionised the fashion world. Although an Irish designer, he had to leave Ireland, as there is a limited fashion industry here. Big international movers do not come to Ireland and seek talent and there is not even a fashion week to display Irish design. Being an artist in Dublin is tough, I suppose its like everywhere else. Underground artists never get financial support, but there are lots of them and much public support for them, many move away frustrated and become international successes abroad and then move back to Ireland.

FF: Is there something that you are particularly proud of having achieved, say a milestone in your career?

Maria Lola Roche : Winning UCD Young Designer of the Year 2012 was an amazing moment in my career as it was a national competition and I faced tough competition. It was voted on by a panel of industry experts, including Stellar and Kiss Magazine Editor Corina Gaffney, Lisa Fitzpatrick and Courtney Smith.

Last year top Italian international designer Marco Vincenzo [Fendi] chose my design ‘Ribbon’ out of 100 entrants, as one of the pieces shortlisted for the Irish Peroni Awards. This was another big moment for myself, as I was only in second year in college and up against designers who had already worked in big fashion houses, attended St. Martins, and who had many years experience.

This year I secured a place among the ten finalists in the 2013 DIT Vodafone Awards, out of 40 entrants. The Irish Independent fashion editor, Barbara Power, was on the judging panel.

FF: What will be your next move? What projects will you be working on?

Maria Lola Roche : My degree was really intensive, and because I choose to do difficult and challenging pieces, 14-17 hours was a regular working day for me. So I am currently taking a short holiday to recharge and look after my health. I’m planing to travel to Italy in the summer and visit some factory’s – and get a luxury collection together as soon as I can.

I have also recently worked with Candice Gordon in styling her last music video. Candice has songs produced by Shane Macgowan, and will be supporting Nick Cave at Body and Soul festival. And hope to collaborate with her again in the near future. Currently I will be working on a commission painting for one of Arnotts top management. I have also written and illustrated a children’s book and hope to get that published soon.

Thank you Maria.

I can’t help myself – I decided to review The Purge. As opposed to most reviews which I have read before watching the movie last night, I thought The Purge was fairly interesting. Great – for all the wrong reasons, however. The reviews I read claimed that it was basically a home invasion gone bad, with much of the backdrop never truly being used. What I took away from the admittedly luke warm acting skills of most, was – as opposed to what others must have seen in this movie – a deeply troubling image of society, morals and religious imagery.

If you’re in it for excessive violence, then The Purge most likely isn’t for you. Not to say that it isn’t violent, but you will probably have seen more violent, and it won’t live up to your expectation. But, first things first. The Purge is open for anyone over 15 – which is I assume due to the “acceptable” level of violence it portrays. It shouldn’t be; the troubling backdrop idea, that for 12 hours each year people are free to use all and any violence against each other, and the fact that this violence is glorified as doing good, and contains an almost cultish aspect of purging oneself from “sin”, is nothing fifteen year olds should be seeing.

The Purge allows people to return into an assumed state of nature, within which, little rules apply. Through purging others, through killing, they are supposedly ridding themselves of the evil inside and outside, of what is part of the nature of a human being. This catharsis once every year grants people to live in peace for the remaining days. This appears to have a strong occult and religious background. Especially as in one of the last scene we can see a group of people holding hands and chanting the 28th Amendment, their right to purge before attacking their prey.

Another running image seems to be the social inequality in light of The Purge. Throughout the first scenes of the movie the audience can hear tv stations playing in the background, where experts speak against the purge, claiming it is purely to rid society of the poor, sick and homeless. Ultimately, the ones that cannot afford to protect themselves and which are the easiest targets.
This theme reappears throughout the movie, especially when a group of self proclaimed “educated and rich” youngsters demand to kill a homeless person which has sought refugee. As said homeless “pig” does not deserve to live.

Finally, greed and jealousy. Dead sins. The 1% living in gated communities are, as the movie shows not any better than the people they are protecting themselves from. If neighbours attack one another “merely because” one family has made more money than they have, then I take the moral of the story that everyone can become a savage and that is what’s troubling.

Your daughter’s boyfriend might want to kill you, your friend might shoot you and your neighbours hunt you.

Points for excellent acting go towards Rhys Wakefield. Probably one of the most insane mimics I have seen from a young actors.
Obviously, the movie had shortcomings, such as the question why the family didn’t have a panic room in their home, or why they wouldn’t stick together throughout the night..

“The Purge is a necessary release that cleanses the soul and America at once. We continue to defend your right to purge as enshrined by the 28th Amendment, and the observance of an annual purge remains a cornerstone of America, a nation reborn.”

Have you seen it? What were your thoughts?

We’re excited to introduce a new column for Fashion Fetishism, which will discuss cinema, movies, theater and opera. While it’s being put up enjoy this review of the hyped “The Great Gatsby” by our new contributor Giulia.

Baz Luhrman has seemingly done it again. With his unique directing style, a pitch-perfect cast, incredibly colourful and vivid shots, and a rather original soundtrack, he was able to recount a story, which admittedly is not that easy to portray – given its deep meaning and symbolism.

Just as with Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge, Baz Luhrman immediately throws us into the sophisticated, glamorous, aggressive chaos of 1920s Long Island and Manhattan. Respectfully, attentively and effectively following the book’s plot, Luhrman carries us with Carraway’s voice through the latter’s experience of Gatsby’s parties and lifestyle. But most importantly, through Gatsby’s relentless efforts at achieving his dreams, at “repeating the past”, with his unique and genuine optimism and hope.

This is what appears on the surface. But shot after shot, scene after scene, and certainly by the end of the film, the audience cannot but assertively agree that really, the character who leads the story in the film is indeed the Great Gatsby himself, … or, to give him full and deserved credit; that is acknowledging Leonardo DiCaprio himself.

The Great Gatsby must surely be the pinnacle of his long acting career. I admittedly have been in complete awe of the skills he so wonderfully showcased – his facial expressions, hand gestures, and body language through which he portrayed the multifaceted personality of Gatsby. The dreams, hopes, doubts and fears.

But he’s not the only one who gave life to this movie. Having always been a great advocate of Carey Mulligan’s ability to say so much with so little words – only by using her facial expressions and body language – she certainly did not let me down this time either.

On top of the at times mesmerizing directing and acting, I must comment (that is jump on the bandwagon) on the vivid, colourful and somehow effectively aggressive screenplay (how incredibly shocking and destabilising are the scenes of the party at Catherine’s place, and of course, at Gatsby’s mansion!?). Especially highlighting the recurrent themes such as the green light and Dr. Eckleburg’s looming eyes, constantly reminding us of Fitzgerald’s symbolism and giving credibility to a movie beyond Hollywood Boxoffices.

Given that the cast and the screenplay so wonderfully exceeded what I imagined Fitzgerald’s novel to be portrayed on a 2013 screen – to be fair, we all know how terrible movies made from books can be – the soundtrack became the cherry on top. Furthermore it fits perfectly into Luhrman’s style of combining classic and modern/contemporary elements (as he for example did in his Romeo + Juliet). I admire this brave choice of music of his because it effectively conveyed the fight between present and past, reality and dreams, pragmatism and ambitious hopes, ultimately transporting us into a far-away, timeless and utopian place, yet so close to everyone’s hearts.

“Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter–tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther…. And one fine morning– So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

- F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, Ch. 9

This article hopes to introduce you to new and exciting developments Fashion Fetishism will undergo over the next few months. We are adding new columns, inviting established food bloggers and theater reviewers to write with us and there will be editorial fashion action going on. To sum up, slowly but steadily, you will see us developing into a magazine that still has the same honest and no nonsense approach than ever.

Key word : slowly – back to our coffee place. The article this refers to has been published in germany, and thus ( how unexpected) is about a german coffee house; it seems that this concept isn’t novel however, and has long existed in Russia. If any readers are aware of that, or have even frequented one, then we would love to hear from you and your experiences. So, what is a Slow Time Coffee House? Basically, instead of paying for your drinks and cakes individually, you pay a flat fee on your time, with – going of the german rates – 2euro entrance and then every additional min. 5cents. So, definitely cheaper than anything I know, and included in that price is as much coffee and cake as you wish, can gobble down. The real exciting part about this type of Coffee Place isn’t the flat rate though – albeit, it is cheap – but the idea that you enter a place in which time doesn’t count. Apart from you paying for time, of course – the irony. People are supposed to feel at home, can exchange their shoes for slippers and play board games or instruments. Furthermore, you’re free to bring your own food or order a pizza to the coffee house. It sounds like a living room in a city, and that’s what it’s supposed to.

Now, for the questions. Would you frequent such a coffee place? And if you would, could you vouch for the quality of the coffee and the cake provided? Meaning that normally one pays the price of an item also for the quality of the item, so will you drink turkish delight or lukewarm tanned water?

If you wish to relax and take time off, does it make sense that others are free to play instruments, munch pizza and unleash their cheesy feet into the world?

“The Light sculpture Forms in Nature resembles Darwinist Ernst Haeckel’s drawings . Using a simple action, such as intensifying the brightness at the center of the artwork, the light transforms the space and adds character, as the work throws oversized shadows onto walls and ceilings in the space in which it hangs. The light sculpture Forms in Nature is partly inspired by Ernst Haeckel’s (1834-1919) detailed plots from nature and is a further development of Hilden & Diaz’
fascination with mirrorings, as they have previously applied in other artworks.

Forms in Nature is a artwork with a light source surrounded by a dense and unruly tree and root system created in minature sculpture. The forest is mirrored around it’s horizontal central axis and forms a circle 360 degrees around the light source and thereby leads one onto the notion of a real world versus an underworld.”
“Interestingly, the roots are those elements of the forest that are the most visible. Thereby the sculpture is not only mirrored, but also turned upside down in Hilden & Diaz’ artwork. As the intensity of the light source increases, the room changes and the space slowly becomes more and more fascinating and unheimlich.

The shadows engulfs the room and transforms the walls into unruly shadows of branches, bushes and gnarled trees. Mirrorings are thrown out upon the walls and ceilings and provide weak Rorschach-like hints of faces, life and flow of
consciousness. Diming the lights transforms the installation and one senses a weak fire burning deep in the center of the forest.”

Hold on to your gloves, bet your hats and leave the horses on. Or something in that direction.
I’ve had the pleasure to be personally invited to the HEADONISM – pretty nifty wordplay there – exhibition during London Fashion Week, which meant I could see the best talent in millinery from the UK ( and already pre-select hat choices for Ascot!). Although I’ve never been much of a hat person – truly have the most useless head for a hat – go on, prove me wrong – these items were more of artistic sculptures than hats. Spotted were swarovski encrusted ones, laser cut ones, wood hats, veiled ones, half dead bird on your head ones – oh Lady Gaga, is that you?

What I found comforting though was that generally the more eclectic the hats got, the more mute the colours were, which is an excellent solution should these be worn out ( out of the fashion crowd that is).

If you search inspiration from previous years please be my well hatted guest : Inspo

So, will you go to Ascot to stare at horses? If so, which hat will you sport for Ascot?

Designs by : Aurora Ozma, Emma Yeo, Moody and Farrell, Piers Atkinson, William Chambers in no particular order.
